The National Farmers Union in NB is pleased to formally announce the winners of the 2014 NFU in NB Scholarship and David Frost Memorial Scholarships, awarded to NB high school graduates pursuing an education in agriculture or a related field. The United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of the Family Farm; encouraging young people to pursue a career in farming is just one of the many ways that the NFU in NB is promoting local, sustainable agriculture.
NFU in NB director and selection committee chair, Harold Culberson of Waterville, Carleton County, made the announcement at the National Farmers Union annual regional convention earlier this year.
J. Andrew Hornbrook of Mt. Middleton is the 2014 recipient of the David Frost Memorial Scholarship for a graduate accepted into a two year diploma program. Hornbrook will attend Dalhousie University Truro (formerly NSAC) to take a Diploma in Technology (Dairy) and he will be awarded $500 upon his return to classes next January.
Katie McCallum of Tabusintac and Emma Allen of Keswick Ridge are both recipients of David Frost Memorial Scholarships for graduates accepted into degree programs. McCallum is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Plant Science) at Dalhousie University Truro. Allen will attend the University of Guelph to take a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Both McCallum and Allen will be awarded $1000 upon their return to classes in January, 2015.
Stevee Graham of Long Settlement, Carleton County, is enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering degree program at Carleton University in Ottawa and will receive the $1000 NFU in NB scholarship upon confirmation of her return to classes in January, 2015.
Members of the NFU in NB scholarship committee chose the winners from deserving applications submitted around the 247farmakeio.com. Selection is based on the applicants’ commitment to study agriculture or a related field, and on their performance in high school, as well as their involvement in agriculture and financial need. The David Frost Memorial scholarships were established by the NFU in NB four years ago to honour the memory of the David Frost, a respected agrologist who passed away in March, 2010.
The NFU in NB is an accredited general farm organization representing farm families in all agricultural commodities. NFU members believe that the problems facing farmers are common problems, and that farmers producing diverse products must work together to advance effective solutions. The NFU works toward the development of economic and social policies that will maintain the family farm as the primary food-producing unit.
Scholarship applications will be available again this fall from high school guidance counselors throughout the province and from members of the NFU in NB.
