PROVINCIAL AGRICULTURAL GROUP LAUNCHES NB FOOD LABEL SURVEY
For immediate release:
The National Farmers Union in New Brunswick (NFU in NB) has launched an initiative to better understand and support the marketing needs of NB farmers.
“We have been in on-going talks with the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, encouraging them to find better ways to support local food production in the province,” explains NFU in NB Executive Director, Melanie Jellett.
The NFU in NB believes that local food needs to be accessible, well promoted and easy to identify. We suggest that a label be made available for farmers to place on their products for sale at local grocers, farmers markets, etc., indicating the products were grown and produced in the province of New Brunswick.
“Among consumers there is an increased interest in local food, and we were encouraged to see New Brunswick’s Agricultural Minister Michael Olscamp last week promoting local food procurement this holiday season,” says Jellett. “The NFU in NB wants to know how can we make it easier for consumers to locate local food, and are asking agricultural producers in the province to fill out a short survey to help determine if producers are interested in a labeling initiative and what exactly that should look like.”
The survey can be found online www.nfunb.org. For a paper copy, or for more information, contact the NFU in NB at (506) 538-1189 or toll-free 1-888-246-5583.
The NFU in NB is one of two accredited general farm organizations in the province. Its members work together to achieve farm policies which will ensure dignity and security of income for agricultural producers, while enhancing the land for future generations.
