Update on Bill-75

The National Farmers Union is pleased to update our members, the public and supporting organizations that Bill-75 has not yet passed 3rd reading in the Legislative Assembly. It was read for the 3rd time March 29th, where Members of the Legislative Assembly from both the Green and Liberal Parties spoke about the Bill citing our open letter and the concerns we raised. An amendment was proposed by Mr. Coon to pull the bill, which was defeated by the government, Ms. Mitton then read the entirety of our open letter and all 46 signatories and proposed an amendment to send the Bill to the Law Amendments committee, which was acclaimed.

The Law Amendments Committee is a cross party committee where Bills may be referred for review and input. The Committee may hold public hearings on the subject matter of the bill and may hear from expert witnesses. We are very encouraged and hopeful by this move as Bills very rarely go to committee at 3rd reading. We appreciate the support of our collaborative partners at AgNB, and in particular want to highlight the very hard work of the NFU-NB staff for pursuing this issue and devoting time to research, writing and collecting signatures.

We thank all members, the public and organizations that have supported us in this work. We encourage everyone to continue putting pressure on their MLA’s and the committee regarding the implications of this Bill. We have an easy form on our website to fill out to write to your MLA about the Bill.
